Besstel Child and Adult Psychiatric Foundation was officially inaugurated in Accra on 30th of March 2018 in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Mental Health Authority of Ghana under the auspices of the Chief of Staff and the Diaspora Affairs Department at the Office of the President of Ghana.
In the United Kingdom, Besstel Foundation was inaugurated on 26th May 2019. The occasion was graced by officials of the Ghana High Commission, South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, Mayor of London Borough of Haringey and Dr Akuffo, who was the Chairman of the occasion.
South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLAM) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on this day to partner Besstel Foundation to put mental health care in Ghana on a sound footing.
The Besstel Foundation works tirelessly to raise awareness about mental ill health and address stigma. Besstel works directly with people living with mental illness while supporting and educating their families and communities. This work occurs in Ghana with a programme of events. In the UK, Besstel Foundation is dedicated to narrowing inequalities in mental health outcomes within the Black and Minority Ethnic (BAME) community through a programme of awareness creation, preventive support and delivering positive interventions to improve service outcomes. There are monthly meetings of support groups in South London and East London for Ghanaians and their families. The needs of other Black and minority ethnic groups are also catered for. All our activities are supported by mental health professionals.
One key objective of the Foundation is to support psychiatric hospitals in Ghana to raise standards of care and work towards a world class mental health services. Initially, we are working closely with 37 Military Hospital and Ghana prison services and have plans to build the first mental health recovery hospital in West Africa also to be situated in Kumasi. This proposed facility would have the capacity to care for patients while supporting their families and equipping professionals and other care givers to deliver the highest quality mental health services.
For these projects and programmes Besstel Foundation is currently undertaking or intends to roll out in the short medium term, we wish to acknowledge the invaluable support of our partners and welcome the collaboration of new stakeholders.
