Besstel Foundation is a non-governmental organization with a core focus on mental health advocacy, awareness, and support. Their programs aim to combat stigma, provide mental health education, and ensure access to critical mental health resources. However, the foundation recognizes that sustainable mental well-being is intricately linked to the overall quality of life, which includes access to basic amenities such as clean water.
The Abongo Muntakilu Borehole Project
The commissioning of the borehole in the Abongo Muntakilu community is a testament to Besstel Foundation’s holistic approach to social change. The community, like many others in peri-urban Ghana, has struggled with access to safe and clean drinking water. This project alleviates a long-standing challenge, reducing the burden on residents who previously had to trek long distances for water or rely on unsafe sources.
The project commissioned in honour of the late Joan Gomez is not just about providing clean water but rather enhancing health, reducing waterborne diseases, and promoting mental peace for residents. With a reliable water source, families can now focus on other developmental activities without the constant worry of water scarcity.
The short ceremony was graced by the Peter Hasler, the foundation’s life patron, CEO of the foundation Stella Bryant and George Bessa Simons
Linking Clean Water to Mental Health
Access to clean water directly impacts mental health. In communities like Abongo Muntakilu, the stress and anxiety of water scarcity can take a toll on residents’ mental well-being. By addressing this fundamental need, Besstel Foundation has made strides in reducing the environmental stressors that contribute to mental health challenges.
Broader Impact and Future Plans
This project is part of Besstel Foundation’s broader commitment to community transformation. Over the years, the NGO has rolled out programs such as mental health workshops, counseling sessions, and support networks for vulnerable groups. Their approach combines addressing immediate needs with long-term development, ensuring communities are empowered to thrive.
For the future, Besstel Foundation aims to replicate similar initiatives in other underserved communities while continuing its advocacy for mental health.
A Call for Support
The foundation’s work, including the borehole project in Abongo Muntakilu, underscores the importance of partnerships and support. Besstel Foundation calls on individuals, corporate entities, and international organizations to join hands in making mental health and community development a priority across Ghana and beyond.
Besstel Foundation’s efforts highlight how addressing basic needs like water access can have a ripple effect on broader social and mental well-being. The borehole water project at Abongo Muntakilu, in Kasoa Millennium City, is more than just an infrastructure milestone; it is a beacon of hope for a healthier, more empowered community.
